Big.Little Creations is a Melbourne-based designer and creator of beautiful unique milestone cards for baby and adults.
These are the words of Kristina, the owner and founder of the beautiful business that is Big.Little Creations.
Tell us a bit about yourself?
I’m Kristina, 27 years old and grew up in Geelong. I’m a lover of all things chocolate, wine, cheese and shoes. I moved to Melbourne in 2015 where i married my handsome husband and we built our first home together. Even though Geelong to Melbourne is only a 50 min drive, i still miss the closeness Geelong has to offer. My best friend literally lived right behind my house! But i do love Melbourne as there’s so much to see and do. In 2016 we welcomed our gorgeous boy, who is now 18 months and keeps us on our toes! Love every moment with him.
How did you get started with your biz?
When i had my son, i was searching for milestone cards and couldn’t find much of a variety. Then it got me thinking, if i would ever consider creating my own. It wasn’t until the start of 2017 when i actually decided to give it a go. After a couple of weeks and heaps of late nights i realized that i was having fun creating and designing and thought, i’m going to give this a go and see how it pans out. It was a tough few months to start it up and get things rolling but have been/staying positive and like they say, you wont know until you give it a go!
What (or who) are your biggest influences?
My husband and my mom. They both have different personalities but the morals are the same. Whenever i feel down, sad, etc they always seem to help me back up on my feet. Starting this small biz, they have been my no 1 supporters and keep encouraging me not to give up and continue to strive!
Do you experience mum guilt and how do you tackle that?
Yes! especially when i leave my son with someone else so i can enjoy a night out, grocery shopping or ‘kid free time”. At first i found it very difficult to leave him and wasn’t able to enjoy my self. I found i was constantly calling to check up on him. Good thing i had friends and family to help me out to make me realize its okay to have “kid free” time here and there.
If you could sum up your day in three words, what would those words be?
I don’t know how or why but i always seem to find a pile of washing, it never ends! Happy – whether i had a good or bad day, my family is always there to put a smile on my face. Coffee – need coffee to get through the day. Anytime is coffee time 🙂
Give me your best kid distraction strategy:
To be honest, i don’t have one. I’ve tried many and many but they don’t seem to last long. Open to suggestions though.
What does your workstation look like?
I don’t have a specific work area since my products are all done on the computer, but i like to move around the house. I go from room to room. On the couch is may fav atm.
Most embarrassing moment as a mum, or in your biz?
My most embarrassing moment as a mum would have to be the first time my little one swore. We were sitting on the couch and the remote fell and without hesitation i said “oh sh**!” and of course he repeats it! Not even 10 mins after that i was in the kitchen cooking dinner and water spilled all over the stove, once again without even realizing he was standing behind me i said “f***!”. Later that evening my husband and i were driving to bunnings and on the way there my son kept saying sh** and F***. I guess all you can do is laugh right?
What are you most proud of achieving biz wise?
It would have to be that i haven’t given up yet. For those who have a small biz know that it takes time for it all to pan out and can be unpredictable. Some weeks are better than others but i guess that’s the fun part as you never know what kind of week your going to have?
What are your big goals for the next 12 months?
To be more well known, and to have more products launched (got them in my head). I would also like to hope to have my website up and running!!
