Whether it’s your first child or not, if you’re in or coming up to your third trimester you are probably starting to get things ready for the big day – or starting to THINK about getting things ready. A well packed hospital bag is essential and takes away so much stress on the day so here are my top tips for everything you’ll need (and a little more!) to include to support you through labour, birth and after your gorgeous baby is born.
For you
Comfortable clothes (my fav are always in a soft stretchy fabric) including a set for the trip home
Loose clothes for the birth
Pyjamas, slippers, robe and warm socks
A headband, hair ties and bobby pins
Contact lenses and glasses
Comfortable shoes and rubber thongs (to wear in the shower)
Essential toiletries – lip balm, toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, tissues, hairbrush, shampoo, conditioner, body wash
Little luxuries – Self care is so important and definitely well deserved so make sure you pack something that is going to make you feel pampered. Perhaps a face mask, nail polish, luxurious moisturising cream or super soft pillow case
Nipple cream
Maternity bra and absorbent breast pads
Lots (and lots!) of dark colour undies
Maternity pads or underwear
Snacks for an energy boost – muesli bars, fruits, nuts, crackers, tim tams and lollies are always a good idea
Birth plan
Key documentation including your photo ID, Medicare card and private health insurance details
Camera, phone, headphones and chargers
Plastic bags (to take home soiled items)
Wheat heat bag
Money for incidentals – think vending machine mars bar at 2am and car parking
For your partner
A watch (with a second hand) or timer
Pen and paper (to take notes and fill out the many many forms you’ll need to complete!)
Togs and thongs (to provide assistance for you in the shower)
Comfortable clothes, pyjamas and toiletries (if staying overnight)
Magazines and books
List of key contacts to share the exciting news with
For baby
Clothes for the baby (suggest 4-6 suits plus socks, singlets and a beanie)
Wraps
Newborn nappies and wipes (although these are usually supplied by the hospital)
A properly installed baby car seat (absolutely must and you won’t be able to leave the hospital by car without one!)and blanket for the journey home
A formula feed set including formula, bottles, teats and sterilising equipment
