Little eight-week-old Eli has a mum with a flair for design and passion for DIY. Melanie is a self-employed jeweller who wanted to create a gender-neutral, monochrome space with a splash of colour.
“I chose mint as it can be unisex, as we plan to have more children in the future. If I wish to do so, I could always paint the mint triangles pink. I tried to keep the main pieces and all furniture unisex and just the accessories specifically for a boy.”
Most of this gorgeous room was DIY’d by Melanie, with her husband marking out, taping and painting the feature wall and making the triangle shelf to fit.
The gorgeous chest of drawers is a secondhand treasure given a new lease of life thanks to Melanie’s handiwork. They were originally redwood, which she painted white with grey ombré drawers. The dreamcatcher, ‘ELI’ letter block, camera and scrabble frame are also all DIY projects. Seriously, is there anything this creative mumma can’t do?
Melanie’s father-in-law made the arrow height chart to her specifications. And the monochrome gallery wall? Yep, Melanie designed each of those herself, and had a friend print them all for her.
“My favourite is ‘Schlaf gut kindlein.’ My dad is Swiss and used to tell me this every night; it translates to ‘sleep well baby’.”
As the family have a German Shephard named Kyla, a German Shephard print has been included in the décor, standing watch on the chest of drawers.
Melanie also made the arrow string art on the gallery wall from some wood, nails and string. “That was one of my favourite pieces to make – and so easy!” Love it? Here’s a string art tutorial if you want to give it a go!
She may have saved cash on the DIY projects, but Melanie used the savings to spend on investment pieces. She splurged on the Boori cot, which converts to a toddler bed, and the beautiful rocking chair (and even that was a bargain at 20% off as it was display stock, and the last one left!)
Eli’s room took Melanie about 3 months to pull together, and the result is a stunning nursery that is truly a bespoke, one-of-a-kind room due to all the clever DIY-ing.
