Kylie’s love of travel and exploring the world has inspired this simple yet stunning nursery for 10-month-old Cooper. Beautiful statement pieces and DIY touches make this nursery the perfect space for a tiny traveler…
Tell us a bit about you?
I work in childcare and have done for the last 12 years. I have always known I’ve wanted to work with children and wanted my own. We love going to the beach and Cooper has become a little water baby loving to spend every second he can in some sort of water play whether it be the beach, pool, bath or even in a bucket.
Adam and I have been married for 3 years and have been together traveling the world for 11 years. We love traveling and exploring new countries and decided to live in Florence, Italy while still traveling to different places in Europe and even made our way to Morocco. We hope to take Cooper overseas next year (with a another baby in due in August this year) and hope he loves the traveling lifestyle as much as us.
How would you describe your overall style?
I don’t like things to be too cluttered so I like to keep things a bit more basic. Many of the pieces of furniture in our home have been made by myself and my father. I love big pieces of wooden furniture that have their own style such as the set of Moroccan drawers in Cooper’s room.
What “look” or theme did you set out to achieve with Cooper’s room?
We didn’t know the gender of Cooper so I wanted to stick with neutral colours so I started with looking up ideas for a feature wall and my cousin helped me tape it all up and paint it over a weekend. The theme was inspired by some handles we received from Spice to Space “Dream, explore, discover” which we thought was appropriate considering we have done so much travel and would love for Cooper to explore the world as well. We added a globe in his room to help encourage this interest.
Where is your favourite place to shop for kid’s decor?
I love to find ideas on Pinterest and try to make them myself and put my own spin on them. I make many of my own decorations but love finding bits and pieces at Kmart.
Did you DIY any part of Cooper’s room?
I wanted to be able to chart Cooper’s height as he grows and wanted to be able to take it with us when we move so I made my own “ruler” and hung it on the wall. I plan on marking it twice a year and will be able to add any other children we have onto it. I also bought the Moroccan style drawers on Gumtree and got them for a bargain! I made the artwork in Cooper’s room by taking photos of different parts of his body when he was first born and printed them at Officworks and framing them. These are my absolute favourite part of Cooper’s room.
We were given the rocking chair as it is a family heirloom.
What item was your biggest splurge?
We managed to keep the cost down by making many of the items in Cooper’s room so the biggest splurge would have been his cot.
How long did it take to put it all together?
We had just moved into our apartment 6 weeks after Cooper was born so with the help of both sides of our family we painted the entire house and got Cooper’s new nursery ready in a week! I had collected many pieces while pregnant and stored them ready for his new nursery.
