This week we’ve had the pleasure of chatting to Nerys Thomas of the teeny tiny linen co. We featured her beautiful brand on our Instagram feed a little while back, and we’re thrilled that she agreed to talk to us again, so we could all get to know her a little better.
Tell us a little bit about your background
I was born in North Wales, UK, and moved to Australia seven years ago with my husband who is from Melbourne. I am a doctor by trade, and although I loved practicing medicine, I also always had a passion for interiors and home décor. Our first two children were born in the UK and then we moved to Melbourne. Changing countries and having a third child prompted a total rethink when it came time to return to work after maternity leave. A year’s maternity leave turned into 5 and I realised it was time to do something different!
How did your business idea come about?
I wanted to be able to spend more time with the children on my own terms, and so combining my love of interiors and children seemed to be the obvious thing to do. I love natural fibres – synthetic materials just don’t have the same qualities, and I knew that I wanted my brand to be all about quality and about products which offer longevity. If you can buy quality once it means you can buy less in the long run.
What makes your linen range unique?
I knew that I wanted my products to reflect my heritage in some way. I didn’t want to buy ‘en masse’ from Asia – I wanted to support smaller businesses who are passionate about craftsmanship and quality. Our initial range includes pure, stonewashed, European linen and pure lambswool pocket blankets, and is sourced entirely from Europe. The aim is to continue that whilst adding in other products from Australia.
I have learned so much about business in the last nine months since I first had the concept for the teeny tiny linen co. I brought many transferable skills with me from medicine (and from being a mother), and I am thoroughly enjoying learning every day and building a brand which I hope people will come to associate with quality and timeless designs for their children.
