Based in sunny Mackay Queensland, Laras Nursery hand makes the most beautiful personalised flower mobiles. Torri, the amazingly talented Biz Babe behind Laras Nursery chats with us about her family and her inspirations.

Hi! My name is Torri! I’m a young mum to a little 14 month old girl named Lara! I fell pregnant with my daughter at 18, had her at 19 and now I’m 20 years old! I have a partner named Jacob, we have been together now for 6 and a half years! We have been together since we were just 14 years old!! He’s my biggest supporter and does absolutely everything he can do for me and my business and works nearly every day to support my daughter and I! He truely is an amazing man! I am the youngest child of four! My second youngest brother is 10 years older then me so it’s a bit like I’m an only child at times! I was born and raised in Mackay and have not lived anywhere else and don’t plan to!
How did you get started with your biz?
I created my daughters mobile when I was pregnant as I wanted her room to have something that her mummy made just for her. I absolutely loved her mobile and every time I walked in her room it was the first thing I looked at and it always gave me a special feeling knowing I created something just for my baby. So I want to do the same for you. I started this because I want you to have your own personal touch, but I create it for you! I message you throughout the process and let you say yes and no to what I add. I absolutely love how personal I have made it and I myself have made some great friendships out of it doing so! You aren’t just a pay check to me at all! I genuinely want to make something special to you and give you that fuzzy feeling I get looking at my daughters room!
What (or who) are your biggest influences?
I don’t really have any big influencers, I love every single one of the people I follow in many different ways. I try to support every single business I can as I know the hard work people put into their business behind the scenes. So to answer that I love everyone’s business and they are all my favourite. I will always be your biggest fan!
Do you experience mum guilt and how do you tackle that?
Oh my goodness yes! Every day! If my daughter doesn’t eat enough I stress and feel guilty thinking she doesn’t like anything I give her and she’d rather starve! (I know she wouldn’t starve herself it’s just my mum brain) or if I’m trying to do things for my business I feel as I haven’t given enough of my time to her. To over come mum guilt I think to myself have I done everything I possibly could to keep my little girl healthy and happy today. I also try and read books and tickle and kiss her all up and tell her 2838x a day that I love her ♥️ Just know that no one is better at being a mummy to her then you are♥️ You are her everything just being with her is enough ♥️ As long as your babies are healthy and happy you’re doing an absolutely amazing job and should feel so proud of yourself!! Look at you your raising the next generation! That’s pretty cool!
If you could sum up your day in three words what would those words be?
Love, patience and craziness 🤣
What does your workstation look like?
Well if I’m completely honest my daughter just grabbed ALL of my flowers and accessories and threw them ALL over the place having the time of her life!! But like I say to everyone as long as it gives me 5 minutes to do something I really don’t care if she’s making a mess 🤣(I regret letting her when it takes me an hour to pack it away!) but I’ll show a pic of the table she cannot reach🙊
Give me your best kid distraction strategy:
My daughter is so hard to distract! She is the biggest mummies girl so all she wants is to sit on my lap and she is happy as Larry! But things that do distract her is playing with her doggies, her cousins and I’ll give some toys to play with but it doesn’t last long! I haven’t mastered the distraction part yet! (While I’m typing this she has one hand down my top sitting right on top of me watching wiggles 🤦🏼♀️)
Most embarrassing moment as a mum, or in your biz?
I don’t really get too embarrassed! I just embrace everything and laugh it off! The only time I can really think of is when your breastfeeding and I have a letdown while shopping and I don’t notice and have to massive wet patches on my shirt that I’ve walked all through the shopping centre with!! 🤦🏼♀️
What are you most proud of achieving biz wise?
I’m most proud of just starting my business! I really don’t like being in the spot light whatsoever, so doing this really frightened me! But I was so passionate about starting my own business I just did it! My partner actually gave me the idea while we were driving, as soon as I got out of the car I created everything in under half an hour and just posted it! I honestly had no clue what I even wanted out of it I just knew if I didn’t do it that day I would of wussed out! And let me tell you I have NO regrets! All I can say if any Mummas out there are passionate about something and your thinking of starting a business DO IT!!! I have met so many amazing people and have learnt so much stuff from it! You gain the most amazing friendships and it makes you feel like you have a purpose! If I have encouraged you please let me know I will cheer you on as much as I can 🎉
What are your big goals for the next 12 months?
My goals are to make it to the handmade markets! It takes me quite I while to make just one mobile so I want to challenge myself and make a whole heap and get myself out there! I don’t have high expectations, all I want is to enjoy my time having a business and not aim too high to where I get disappointed. I’m just taking one step at a time and being grateful for every step that I do take.
